Distinguished Service Award

The board of the European Artificial Intelligence Association, EurAI, invites nominations for the EurAI Distinguished Service Award 2024.

The EurAI Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to two individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the European AI community. The award recognizes their excellent service and dedication towards advancing the field of AI.  

The past recipients of the award are: Erik Sandewall-2012 (University of Linköping, Sweden), Luigia Carlucci Aiello-2014 (Sapienza Università di Roma, Italy), Ramon López de Màntaras-2016 (IIIA-CSIC, Spain), Wolfgang Bibel-2018 (TU Darmstadt, Germany), Alan Bundy-2020 (University of Edinburgh, Scotland), Luc Steels-2022 (University Pompeu Fabra, Spain) and in 2023 (first year with two awardees) Mike Wooldridge (University of Oxford, UK) and Barry O'Sullivan (University College Cork, Ireland).

EurAI fellows, as well as EurAI member societies, can nominate. Recipients must be members of a EurAI society.

The nomination process entails the following steps:
- Nominations should contain a 1-2 page justification explaining why the candidate is considered appropriate for the award. 
- Nominations of candidates should also include a proposed citation to appear on the award certificate. Typically, this citation begins with the text "For contributions to the field of artificial intelligence through sustained service ..." followed by a phrase of, ideally, not more than twenty carefully chosen words that reflect this nominee's demonstrated service to the European AI community. 
- Identify the EurAI society of which the person is a member.

# Introduction  
Nominations are sought for EurAI Fellows 2024. The EurAI Fellows program was initiated in 1999 to recognize individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions to the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe. The EurAI Fellows Program honors only a very small percentage of the total membership of all EurAI member societies (up to a maximum of 3%). Each Fellow will receive a Certificate signed by the EurAI Chair. At each ECAI conference, a Fellows lunch will be sponsored by EurAI to honor the recently elected Fellows. The names of the recently elected Fellows are published each year on the EurAI web page.   

## Who is eligible to be a EurAI Fellow?  

Candidates must be current members of a EurAI member organisation to be eligible for consideration. Usually, only individuals who have contributed to AI for a decade or more after receiving their PhD (or are at an equivalent career stage) will be selected.  

## Who can make a Nomination?  

There are two ways that an individual can be nominated:  
- A EurAI member society can make a nomination. Please note that for each member society, the number of nominations is limited to a maximum of three.
- A nomination can be made by two EurAI Fellows, who must be from different countries.

## What is the Nomination process?  

A nomination must be a single PDF document, including the following:  
- a statement confirming which EurAI member society the candidate is currently a member of;   
- a comprehensive current CV of the candidate; 
- three separate letters of reference, each of which should clearly make a case for why the individual is considered appropriate for EurAI fellowship.

(if the system asks for an abstract - it can be omitted). Please include the name of the nominee in the title of the submission.

Nominations must be submitted by April 30, 2024. We will announce the EurAI Fellows by the end of June.

## How will Nominations be evaluated?  

The EurAI fellows committee will evaluate all nominations. 
The key evaluation criterion will be whether the nominee has achieved exceptional distinction in AI in Europe. The distinction may be evidenced in several ways -- fellows' accomplishments range from pioneering advances in the theory of AI to unusual achievements in AI technology and applications. Leadership in EurAI or EurAI member societies, support of forums for the exchange of ideas, and exceptional service for the international AI community will also be considered in the selection process.  

Most fellowship nominations are for technical contributions, and for most of these, the case is usually based on the nominee's scientific achievements as documented in their publication record. In evaluating such a publication record, the fellowship committee will look for clear evidence of scientific excellence, which may, for example, come in the form of a citation record that indicates a profound influence on the field, a publication record of exceptional quality, or technical results of unusual depth, insight, and impact. Publications in top general AI conferences and AI journals such as ECAI, AAAI, IJCAI, JAIR, and AIJ are important. Note that other forms of technical contribution evidence will also be considered, such as patent awards or statements of longstanding contribution to an industrial AI group effort that has been influential in the field generally; again, clear evidence should be provided of such influence. The fellowship committee will, in all cases, ultimately make decisions based on their professional judgment of the overall quality of the case.

Dissertation Awards

Nominations are invited for the 2023 Artificial Intelligence Dissertation Award sponsored by EurAI, the European Association of Artificial Intelligence. The award recognises superior research and writing by doctoral candidates in artificial intelligence. It is presented annually at the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI), with the winner invited to give a talk at the conference.

Please take a moment to nominate your students or recommend that your colleagues nominate them.
Eligible doctoral theses are those defended after December 1st, 2022, and until December 31st, 2023, in the general area of Artificial Intelligence. The candidate must have defended the dissertation at a European university. The author must be a personal member of a EurAI member society.

To be considered, a dissertation must be nominated by the thesis supervisor, who must submit the following items as a **single PDF file** in the order:
- Nomination cover page that includes: the name, affiliation, and contact details of the nominator; the date of the defence of the dissertation; and the names of the jury/examiners involved in its defence;
- Nomination letters, either digitally signed or scanned original, from two referees supporting the submission and stating their assessment of **why** the thesis should win the award.
- If the candidate did not write the thesis in English, in that case, the nomination must include an English paper describing the core ideas of the thesis submitted for publication in an international journal or a prestigious conference.
- Other information that the nominator considers relevant.
- The complete nominated dissertation.

The selection will be based on the work's originality, impact, and written quality. Work that has been submitted to and/or accepted at workshops, conferences, or journals will be considered more favourably. Work that is primarily attributed to the student's initiative will also be considered more favourably. Finally, the committee will consider the quality of the written document. **The jury's decision is final**.

**This award includes a certificate signed by the EurAI President and 1,500€**

Nominations are due by **May 31, 2024**, by submitting a single PDF file as described above, listing both the NOMINATED candidate and the NOMINATOR as the AUTHORS.

If a thesis is nominated for another national or international award before or during its review for the EurAI dissertation award, in that case, the author is requested to inform the EurAI dissertation award committee about this fact. 
The winner of the Best PhD Award will be **announced by the mid of August 2024**.
The Award will be presented during ECAI2024 at Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
The best theses will be published as a book by IOS Press.
